Vista Security Conflict with mIRC (deletes mIRC directory on restart)

This Support Document addresses a recently discovered issue in which Vista users experince the deletion of:

    A.    the entire mIRC directory itself; or
    B.    Files within the mIRC directory (script1.txt, example)

The problem results from Vista's complex security settings that differ greatly from previous versions of Windows.  Khaled Mardam-Bey (the creator of mIRC) is presently developing a fix to combat this problem.  Therefore, future versions of mIRC should resolve this problem and this "work-around" will hopefully become unecessary.

Summary of work-around:  The user's security settings in the original mirc.exe need to be modified to grant full authority to the username that installed and is using mIRC.

  Procedure to follow:

    1.    Click on Start, then click Computer (as pictured below).

    2.    Double click on the hard drive icon with the Windows flag on it (pictured below).

    3.    Open the folder 'Program Files'

    4.    Open the folder 'FTC Chat Commander' or if not using FTC's Chat Commander, the name that corresponds to the mIRC client installed.

    5.    Find the file named 'mirc'. It has a colorful logo (pictured below). Right click on that file and select Properties.

    6.    Once the mIRC properties window comes up, click on the Security tab (pictured below).

    7.    Click on the button labelled Advanced (pictured above).

    8.    Click on the button labelled Edit. It should have a Defender Shield logo on it (pictured above).

    9.    If neccesary, enter the details of an administrative user account. Click to continue.

    10.   Click on the button labelled Add... (pictured below).

    11.   Enter your Windows username in the entry-box labelled 'Enter the object name to select' (pictured below).

NOTE:     You can find out your username by clicking on the Start Menu. The name of your home folder (first item on the top right of the Start Menu) is your username.  The name used in this example is 'Jason' but your username will be the name you chose when you first set up your computer.  Therefore, substitute your username for the name 'Jason' whenever it appears in this tutorial.

    12.   Click OK.

    13.   Click on Full Control, under the checkbox labelled Allow (pictured below).

    14.   Click OK on all dialogs to exit the mirc properties windows.

    15.   Restart your computer.

Congratulations!  The Vista mIRC deletion problem should now be resolved.  To confirm that the problem is truly resolved, restart your computer and make sure mIRC. the mIRC directory and all of your scripts remain intact.
